Stem Cells’ role in boosting immunity

The immune system plays a vital role in the body’s defense against infections and antigens. It is made out of different organs, cells, and protein that work together against germs (such as bacteria, viruses and fungi) and toxins (chemicals made by microbes).

The immune system consists of 2 main parts: innate and adaptive. The innate immune system is something you are born with while the adaptive immune system is developed when your body is exposed to diseases or when you are immunized against them with vaccines.

How does it work?

Everyday our body is exposed to foreign substances and the immune system can detect a difference between the body’s own healthy cells and these threat agents.

For the innate system, it is your rapid response system that comes into play within hours of an antigen’s appearance in the body. It is made up of the skin, the eye’s cornea and the mucous membrane that lines the gastrointestinal, respiratory and genitourinary tracts. It’s main purpose is to prevent immediately the spread of foreign pathogens throughout the body.

As for the adaptive system, with the help from the innate system, it produces antibodies to protect your body from specific invasions. These antibodies are created by B lymphocytes and take several days to develop but after the first exposure, it will remain in the body so it can automatically recognize and combat these threats. It’s effect is long-lasting, highly specific, and is sustained long-term by memory T cells.

Role of the Stem Cell in Immunity Boosting

Stem cells in our bodies act as reservoirs of cells that divide to produce new stem cells, as well as different types of specialized cells that are needed to secure tissue renewal and function. The stem cells can develop into red blood cells (carries oxygen), white blood cells (fights infection) or platelets (help blood clot). Its role is to renew the repertoire of blood cells, including cells of the immune system, which are essential to fight infections and other diseases.

Stem cells transplants are beneficial for those who are fighting blood or immune system illnesses, autoimmune diseases such as lupus, immune deficiency, blood disorders etc.
